Soumitra Chatterjee or Soumitra Chattopadhyay was a legendary Bengali and Indian film actor born on January 19, 1935. He was best known for his works with Oscar-winning film director Satyajit Ray, the most prominent face of Ray's films, together they worked in 14 films.
Soumitra Chattopadhyay was the first Indian film personality, who awarded "Ordre des Arts et des Lettres," France's highest award for artists. Soumitra was the winner of Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
In 2012, he received India's highest award in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, given by the government of India for his for lifetime achievement. Till 2016, he acted more than 210 films in his career.
Apur Sansar, released in 1959 was his debut film. Also he was awarded the introductory Filmfare Awards East for Best Male Actor (Critics) for his role in Rupkatha Noy, and won 7 Filmfare Awards. In 2006 he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for the film Podokkhep. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2004.
