The World Music Day also known as Fête de la Musique is an annual music celebration, which celebrates on 21 June every year. On this day musicians play for fun and not for payment as free concerts, the citizens of a city or country play music outside in their neighborhoods or in public spaces and parks.

Maurice Fleuret became Director of Music and Dance in October 1981, at the Ministry of Culture at Jack Lang's request. It first took place in 1982 in Paris as the Fête de la Musique. He applied his reflections to the musical practice and its evolution: the music everywhere and the concert nowhere

Almost all the public areas are brimming with live music and participatory music-making opportunities. Over 130 countries and over 1,000 cities participate in Fête de la Musique across the world. There are 82 cities participating, in the United States alone. The goal of Music Day is to provide thousands of free concerts throughout the day.
