Help In Raising Funds For Slum Dwellers & Farmers
As a journalist who has been writing and reporting on the human suffering caused by the virus, I was devastated by the lack of resources and help for the poor underprivileged. In the last three weeks, I and my friend Diana have been documenting cases from Dharavi, Sion, Sewri, Ghansoli and Koperkhairane. The families tell me that the starvation will likely kill them before the virus. Parvati, five months pregnant has been surviving on one banana a day. Rukma bai is on dialysis and was turned away from the hospital after they told her COVID was a priority. Initially, with my funds and with help from friends and family we tried helping and giving food packets. But as we talk, we are staring at two thousand families who need food, medicines, hospitalisation, sanitary needs, some need a temporary roof on their heads in this scorching sun. We have mainly been working in Dharavi and Navi Mumbai providing food and now packets of oil, rice, sugar, dal, flour, baby food, clothes, bedsheets, hospital fees, transport to their respective villages. Some have been cured of COVID and now need post-hospitalisation care. Other COVID patients are in slums were social distancing is a privilege and they are unable to get treatment in hospitals. So we are getting help for them in their houses. This is a long drawn battle for survival and we have begun with tiny steps. We are looking at supporting close to two thousand of the poorest of the poor and sustain that support for a month including farmers from nasik and latur who are in abject poverty. In this crisis for humanity, while we are living a privileged existence, we request you to do your bit. Please donate.
