New Delhi: Former Indian President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee has died. He was 84 years old. He was treated at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi and was diagnosed with Covid-19. He was on a ventilator after undergoing emergency surgery following a brain hemorrhage. His death, which had been in critical condition for the past few days, was confirmed today by his son Abhijit Mukherjee.
His son Abhijit Mukherjee confirmed his death via Twitter. President Ramnath Kovind and Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tributes to Pranab Mukherjee.
Pranab Mukherjee was on the field in the 1970s, when India witnessed the rise of the Sangh Parivar in the turbulent 1970s, the 1980s, which witnessed the assassination of Indira Gandhi and Sikh extremism. He entered the Lok Sabha in 2004 after a quarter of a century in the Rajya Sabha. There are few non-Pranab ministries like foreign affairs, defense and finance. Mukherjee stepped down as Prime Minister in 1984 and 2004. Pranab Mukherjee, who continued his journey in public with patience, finally got that great opportunity to become number one.
He was sworn in as President on July 25, 2012, following the resignation of Pratibha Patil. Pranab Mukherjee has been at the helm of the country for five years, avoiding controversy and traveling across the country to connect with the people. He reminded them of equality when the country goes into intolerance. He did not hesitate to make a decision on the mercy petitions. He never turned his face away from his opponents. He maintained good relations with Jyoti Basu, the CPM leader in Bengal, and later with Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. He did not hesitate to go to the RSS headquarters and still had something to say.
He was born on December 11, 1935 in Mirati, Bengal, part of British India, the son of freedom fighter and Congress leader Kamada Kinker Mukherjee and Rajalakshmi. Pranab Mukherjee, a young man who walked 11 km to school and swam across the river, graduated from Kolkata University with a bachelor's degree and eventually tried his hand at the roles of UD clerk, journalist and teacher.
Pranab Mukherjee started as V. K. Krishna Menon's election agent. In 1969, he joined the Rajya Sabha and later the Union Cabinet as a loyalist of Indira Gandhi. He has been a member of the Rajya Sabha five times since 1969 and twice in the Lok Sabha since 2004. He was a member of the Working Committee of the Congress for 23 years.
