The director died in a hospital in the Latvian capital of Riga, but the hospital did not comment on the death due to European laws.
Kim arrived in Latvia one month ago to buy his new house there and to apply for alien residency status, The Latvian news portal Delfi reported.
The veteran director has won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival with his 2012 film Pieta, which tells the story of a brutal mother-and-son tale of revenge and redemption. Kim also won the best director award at festivals in Venice and Berlin.
The director also received critical acclaim for his movies, which filming excessive violence and rape scenes.
