Kerala's first beachside elevated highway; Alappuzha Bypass Inauguration, half a century of waiting ends

Alappuzha: After a long wait of half a century, the Alappuzha bypass will be opened today for the public. Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the bypass. The main attraction of the Alappuzha Bypass is that it is Kerala's first beachside elevated highway. The opening of the bypass will give a big relief to the traffic congestion in Alappuzha. Vehicles that travel from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi and back is no longer required to board in Alappuzha town.

The idea of a bypass proposed by the then Public Works Minister T. K. Divakaran in 1969 to solve the traffic congestion in Alappuzha is now coming true. The first construction of the bridge was inaugurated in December 1990, three decades later. The first phase was completed in 2001, and the construction of the second phase began in 2004 but was delayed for years due to land acquisition and railway overbridges.

In 2006, M. K. Muneer, the then Public Works Minister, announced the idea of a beachside flyover. But the central and state governments were still at loggerheads over the railway overbridge and flyover. Finally, in 2009, the High Court directed the immediate completion of the Kollam and Alappuzha bypasses. Subsequently, in 2012, the Oommen Chandy government announced that the bypass would be completed as a joint venture between the Central and State Governments.

In 2015, a new estimate came out with a cost of Rs 344 crore, and construction resumed on April 10, and in 2016 huge pillars were erected along the beach for the overpass. Despite this, the construction of the railway overbridges at Kuthirapanthi and Malikamukku had not yet begun.

Even when the Pinarayi government came to power, the Public Works Department spent more time resolving disputes with the railways. Finally, the railway overbridges were completed by June 2020, and the tarring and renovation work was completed expeditiously.

The distance of the bypass is 6.8 km, of this, 3.2 km is the beachside elevated highway. The bypass starting at Kalarcode and ends at Kommady. Coming from the Kollam area, the bypass starts from Kalarcode. Coming from Ernakulam, you can take the bypass from Kommady.

As it is part of the National Highway, a Six-lane road is required, but at the time of its inauguration, there is only a Two-lane road on the bypass.
