There are three routes to get to and from Munnar, two of which are popular. Let's get acquainted with what they are:
Top Station - Vattavada route:
The main attraction of this route is that all the main spots are on the same route including Rose Garden, Carmelgiri Elephant Park, Carmelgiri Botanical Garden, Photo Point, Mattupetty Dam, Boating Point, Echo Point, Kundala Dam, Top Station via Yellapetty are the most attractive tourist spots in Munnar, from here, you can go to Vattavada, the tallest agricultural village in Kerala, where you can see the seasonal crops and buy the orchards. You can also visit many more places including Chilanthiyar Falls in a single day.
Marayoor - Kanthalloor route:
Eravikulam National Park on the Marayoor Route (located in Rajamalai, home to the largest number of Nilgiri tahrs or Nilgiritragus hylocrius in Asia). You need to park your vehicles here and take the Forest Department's minibus to continue travelling. There are some rumours that "if you go this way, you will lose time and you will not be able to see the goat even if you give cash". It is kind of fortunate to see the Nilgiri tahrs in their natural habitat here, despite the journey being an experience for a traveller, even if you can not see them.
This way, through the middle of a small forest, in the middle of a tea garden, by the edge of a waterfall, you will reach one of the highest places in Kerala where you can easily and safely walk. There is a small coffee shop in this area but it is better for those who go with children to have enough food and water. When you walk back, you are more likely to feel hungry. No food, water or plastic is allowed beyond the check post, you can keep your bags at a shop nearby the check post, and you can walk there long enough, and buses are always available to get back.
Lakkam Falls (a waterfall in Munnar where you can go down and bathe), Chandanakkad, (Marayoor Sandalwood Forest) (à´šà´¨്ദനക്à´•ാà´Ÿ്) (just before reaching Marayoor, take a detour through Nachivayal to go through the middle of the sandalwood forest, visit the Jaggery Factory (ശർക്à´•à´° à´«ാà´•്à´Ÿà´±ി) in the middle of the sugarcane plantations).
If you take the Kanthalloor route from Marayoor, you can reach the top of the Anakottappara rock, which is famous for Muniyara where you can also witness the awesome 360-degree view of Marayoor.
If you go to Kovilkadavu, you can turn left when you cross the bridge and go a little further, you'll reach the beautiful waterfall called Irachil Para. When you come back, you can go to Kanthalloor and visit the fruit farms. You can also enjoy an off-road safari to Kanthallor Viewpoint.
Devikulam - Thekkady route:
The Devikulam, Chinnakanal, Poopara and Thekkady route is the active busy yet most scenic route in Munnar. The most beautiful road in Munnar called Gap Road or Lockhart Gap View is situated here. In this way, you can visit other locations such as Periyakanal Falls, Anayirangal Dam (the most beautiful dam in Munnar) and a magnificent boating experience are also available here, for a different travelling experience, returnees can take Poopara, Rajakadu and Adimali routes, travellers to Kolukkumalai also use this route.
Marayoor, Udumalpet, Pollachi and Palakkad route on the way back from Munnar will be a different experience for those travelling north from the Palakkad region.
